Lucas Class of 2012 Begins a New Chapter

As many students in the area rejoice in the arrival of summer vacation with its ice cream cones, pool parties, and days at the ball park, there is another group of students who are celebrating for another reason. The students of the Class of 2012 are closing one chapter of their lives and are ready to embark on the next. It's time to walk across that stage (while praying you don't trip) and receive that diploma you've been working so hard for over the past 13 years. It's time for high school graduation.

This past Sunday afternoon, I attended the Lucas High School graduation. As I entered the cafeteria where the soon-to-be graduates were congregating, I could sense their excitement. They were putting the finishing touches on their caps and gowns and were talking amicably among themselves. I was surprised to discover that their class consisted of just over 40 students. It then became obvious to me that a strong bond had formed between the classmates over the course of their years at Lucas. The students were a lot of fun to photograph with their energy running high before their big ceremony.

As the students draped in their black and white robes began to file into the gym toward their seats to the traditional playing of "Pomp and Circumstance," the reality of their commencement was beginning to become more apparent. Some waved to their friends and family in the audience, while others merely took in the emotions that were spilling over in the room, silently and pensively making their way to their seats. Mr. Teague took the stage, and it was time to begin.

A couple of students sang, others were recognized for their numerous academic achievements, and speeches full of reminiscent tales were delivered. It was then time for the moment everyone was waiting for - the receiving of diplomas. After taking those exhilarating steps across the stage, it was time for one last trip down Memory Lane with the senior slideshow. Ooo's, aww's, laughter, and applause filled the gym at the appropriate moments through the presentation, and I think I saw a few tears glistening in some of the students' eyes as the memories of their elementary, middle, and high schools years played across the screen. With the conclusion of the slideshow came the ceremonial moving of the tassels from the right side of their caps to the left while hoots and hollers of excitement filled the gymnasium.

As the students exited the gym and gathered outside, it was time for one final act together as the Lucas High School Class of 2012. After the count of three, the graduates took the caps from their heads and threw them in the air celebrating their commencement. After sorting out whose cap was whose, the graduates were reunited with their friends and family as photo after photo documenting this milestone in their lives was taken. I felt humbled to be a part of such a momentous occasion in these graduates' lives.

To the LHS Class of 2012 - some of you may be going away to college, some of you may join the workplace, while others of you begin a family. Whatever your calling and wherever your future leads you, I wish you the best of luck. I'd like to leave you with this Irish blessing.

"May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand."

Congratulations and well wishes from all of us at Maurer Photography!
