Jumping on Board

Yesterday John and I attended the 2012 Campaign of Caring Kick-Off Breakfast for the United Way of Ashland County. It was held in the Upper Convocation Center of Ashland University, so I knew a delicious AU catered breakfast awaited us. I was also anxious to see the posters and ads that would display the photographs that Maurer Photography had the pleasure of taking of members of our own community.

We arrived bright and early, and when we stepped inside, I felt like I had just entered Grand Central Station! There were people in conductor's hats, photos of great steam engines, and all sorts of railroad items galore. Not to mention if you weren't in a "Live United" T-shirt, you were certainly in the minority. There were people of all walks of life from elementary school children to prominent members of our community. It was inspiring to see so many people of Ashland County unite together for such a noble cause.

After the scrumptious breakfast, all eyes were on the stage as one by one the 14 Pacesetters and Partner Agencies announced their early campaign results. Each one had a unique and entertaining skit to present to everyone who attended. The presentations were fun to watch, and it was exciting to see how much money each group had raised thus far. The Campaign of Caring Kick-Off Breakfast concluded with Mr. Ev DeVaul's final and inspiring words.

As I left the breakfast yesterday, I couldn't help but feel a high of wanting to help my fellow man. Being in the presence of so many selfless people who are willing to give of their time and money is quite an uplifting experience. To conclude this entry, I would like to leave you with this quote from Winston Churchill:

"We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give."

In the spirit of the United Way, I challenge you to do something today to give back to your community.
